Protein: What is it? How do you get it? Why is it needed?

As a vegan the word “protein” is talked about more often than not. People are worried that I am not getting enough.

How much protein do you really need?

0.8g of protein per kilogram of body weight. So since I weight about 110lbs (give or take a few pounds) I would need about 40g of protein a day.

Can you get enough protein on a strictly plant-based diet?

I researched protein deficiency in google and the only thing that came up is children in underdeveloped countries, people who eat nothing but junk food, people who starve themselves, and the elderly who live by themselves. No where have I seen the words “protein deficiency” and “vegan” together. In fact protein deficiency is very rare.

1 cup of black beans=39g of protein

1 cup of quinoa=24g of protein

1 cup of corn=16g of protein

1 cup of soy milk=8g of protein

1 cup brown rice= 5g of protein

1 cup chopped broccoli=2.6g of protein

1 medium apple=0.5g of protein

In comparison:

1 egg=6g of protein

1 cup of cow’s milk=8g of protein

1 cup of chicken= 38g of protein

But the animal products also have saturated fat, cholesterol, hormones.
