This is usually the first question that someone asks me when they find out that I am vegan. I actually had someone tell me, “That salad would taste a lot better if it had meat in it.” One of the many reasons I don’t tell people I’m vegan.
Short answer, no I do not miss meat, dairy or eggs. Because personally I don’t count those things as real food. I also don’t count donuts, or cake as “real food” either. Unless of course those donuts or cake was vegan. In which case, I would probably eat it regardless.
To me, real food is fruit (nature’s perfect food), vegetables, starches (rice, potatoes, ect) and legumes (beans, chickpeas, ect). That is all I need. That is basically all that I eat and I would be happy eating nothing but sweet potatoes, beans, rice, and mangos all day, everyday.
So do I feel left out when I go to a talk at school and they only have non-vegan cookies? Maybe. But it isn’t because I desperately want to eat them, I wouldn’t touch them. But because it’s weird to be the only person not eating the pizza (with cheese and meat) at the pizza party. Or the person not drinking the pop, or donuts. I miss being able to eat whatever I want, whenever I want. But that isn’t going to make me change my mind about the meat, dairy and egg industry. I won’t eat them, no matter what.
